Yet Another File Manager – WW File Cabinet

Posted on January 4th, 2010 by admin in Coding Adventures

World Wide Creations has put together a fun file manager. They describe it thus:

This script allows you to run a site where your users can store and share files. Any file you wish can be used, even movie files. When a user submits a Shockwave flash file or mpeg, it will automatically be displayed as a movie, similar to YouTube. Images will also be shown immediately. Users can save their images, movies and any other file you wish to your site!

You are also in complete control on what files can be uploaded, file size limits, amount a user can store, and how much bandwidth users can use. The WW File Cabinet also allows you to support premium users, giving them more storage and bandwidth.

Here are some of the features included in the WW File Cabinet:

* NEW: New plugin allows Vbulletin Integration!

* Unlimited file types

* Search engine friendly URL option for file pages

* Email verification for registrations (admin option)

* Users can password protect file access

* Users can leave comments on files

* Users can choose to allow comments to be moderated (by them or admin)

* Users can rate files

* Admin can choose to allow everyone to view files, or only registered users

* Turing tests to keep bots from registering (Anti-Spam)

* Users can search for files

* Bandwidth is controlled for each user

* Storage limits

* User is shown how much bandwidth and storage they have used

* Customizable profiles

* Easy template system

* Multiple templates option

* Users can tag their files

* Users can edit their files

* Admin can set different storage/bandwidth settings for premium users

* Users can notify the admin with one click of files that may not be appropriate

* SPEED! The WW File Cabinet is fast

* Uses PHP and MySQL

* Easy hook/plugin system so you can modify the script without changing the source code

* Editable tagline in every email sent to users

* Complete administrator control panel

* Script sends mail either via PHP’s built in mail() function or SMTP

* SMTP authentication supported

* Contact administrator form

* Easy to install

The current version of the WW File Cabinet is FREE.

I had a blast testing it out. I found a couple bugs.

  • Rating system lacks database table and generates error
  • Upgrade script to fix this doesn’t do its job
  • Ratings (once table is added) do not work?

I found the look pretty good, as free scripts go. Still, I had a go at a make over.

File Manager Lyte

Posted on December 8th, 2008 by admin in Coding Adventures, Newz

A easy to install and configure file uploader with management capabilities. Based upon the swf Flash uploader from DHTMLX .COM. File Manager Lyte helps one with the implementation of a modern and feature-rich file uploading. Que up multiple files and monitor upload progress via the progress bar. Different file types are displayed with the corresponding icons (you may add more file types when required).

Built with AJAX technology, the control allows files to be uploaded seamlessly without reloading the entire webpage.

After researching several uploaders I settled upon dhtmlxVault because it simply worked. Uber Uploader presents an upload progress bar but fails where Mod Security is employed. Other Flash swf based uploaders were so techie-geeky convoluted with ‘read forever’ forumns where the common question was; “Does anybody have a working version of this?”. This package will allow one to simply upload one tidy and compact folder, fill in four config variables; VOILA!

File management capabilities include Rename and Delete.

Give it a try and let me know what you think? Feel free to suggest code improvements. Demo»

Blow Up – Another Flickr Display Script

Posted on August 4th, 2008 by admin in Newz

Blow Up Flickr App
As reported by LifeHacker (one of my favorite websites) the webapp Blow Up displays Flickr photos in a full-screen slideshow for closeup browsing. When you want to show off your vacation photos from this summer that you uploaded to Flickr you can either add the Blow Up scripts to your website and share the URL or head over to the Blow Up website, enter your Flickr username; Blow Up will pull down your photos and display them full screen, with a hideaway thumbnail navigation.

Young Rockers

I can’t get enough of playing around with the many ways WordPress can display images. The latest is version 2.4.1 of Fahlstad Design fGallery plugin. This plugin creates an image gallery which seamlessly integrates with WordPress. One gets an administration page for uploading files and managing galleries integrated in the WordPress administration area. Image support includes the following file types: gif, jpg and png. Additionally fGallery integrates the now famous lightbox right in the plugin. Finally, RSS feed available on albums.

WP Cache 2.0 Mucked up My Generator

Sorry ’bout that. It did not occur to me that caching the pages would disable my random password generator. I’ve turned of page caching so it appears it is all good again.
