Understand the Structure ::
Next Gen Gallery considers:
~Gallery~ A container for your photos. If you divide your photos into categories you will most likely want a ‘Gallery’ for each collection.
~Album~ An album would be a collection of one or more Galleries
Workflow ::
Create a Page to Display your Work ::
If you have Next Gen Gallery setup already, have created Galleries and Albums then you can use the handy new button in your visual editor (if you use the visual editor)
If you don’t use the visual editor and have yet to add Galleries and Albums…
1.) Lets create a page to display your first Album (which will have a gallery of images within) - Manage>>Pages>>Create New Page - Give your page a title that represents its content. How about “My Next Gen Gallery” Now add the code to draw in the album/s: [album=ID,extend] Substitute the number one for ID if this is your fist go with Next Gen Gallery. NGG will assign ID’s in succession starting with 1. :: Click Publish.
[Update July 2008] Alternatively with the new version of NextGen Gallery if you have Albums and Gallery/s setup you can use the Edit Gallery screen to create a page.
2.) Lets create a page to display your gallery of images - Manage>>Pages>>Create New Page -
Give your page a title that represents its content. How about “My Cool Photos of Something”
Now add the code to draw in the cool photos: [ gallery=ID ] (note I left a space so don’t copy and paste, write your own) Substitute the number one for ID if this is your fist go with Next Gen Gallery. NGG will assign ID’s in succession starting with 1.
You can also use the handy tool available from your editor to add NextGen Gallery media. See image above for visual reference of where this button is.
Click Publish.
One can have a page to display one or more Album containers of one or more Galleries of work, a page to display a single photo, a page to display a collection of photos (gallery).
Leave Manage Pages and head over to Gallery to get some Albums and Galleries setup.
3.) Create a Gallery and upload photos. Gallery>>Add Gallery - Use one of the links to get images into your gallery. I chose to ftp a folder of images up then tell NGG where they were.
Create additional galleries as needed for your other collections.
4.) Gallery>>Manage Gallery - Edit titles and descriptions for your new photos by accessing the editing interface through the Manage Galleries link in your admin. You will see your gallery with links to edit, delete etc. Click the ‘edit’ link. First select the the page you created to display your collection of images in the Page Link to drop down box. (your page should show up in the list with the title you gave it in step 2 above). Edit Titles and Descriptions as you please. Save your work.
![]()
Note: check the ID of the newly created gallery. If it is your first one it should be 1, the same ID we used in step 2 above. If it is something else then be sure they are the same in both places.
5.) Create an album to house this new Gallery of images by accessing the Album link from your admin. Enter the name for your new album and click update.
6.) Access the Select Album drop down box to select the new album you just created. Drag and drop your gallery of images into the big blue box (very cool) . Click update.
![]()
Note : Confirm the Album Page ID corresponds to the ID in step 1 above.

Hi,
Thanks a lot for this. It wasn’t obvious to me that I need to create pages that would reference my Galleries and Albums. I also wasn’t sure of the relationship bewteen galleries anf albums. Your simple steps saved me a lot of grief.
Thanks a lot!!!
-damian
No worries. Once I got the jist of Galleries and Albums it all went smooth.
Thanks for this !
I never thought that this getting so fast…
I release a very first version to get some feedback, but now more than 3000 users download the plugin and reports bugs and features.
Everything is still at the beginning and I must reconsider to rename gallery album, your post will help many user until I’m able to write a better documentation
This is one of the best plugins that I have come across. Thanks It would be cool if it worked for mu. So many plugins don’t work with mu.
How can I keep the thumbnails from stretching. If I have a tall narrow image I want it to be a smaller image that will fit in the square. Say an image is a perfect square and the thumb diplays a 2″x2″ image that looks great. But then I upload an image thats say 5″ x 3″ then the thumb will strech it and make it look funny like a low resolution square. I want the image to fit inside the square so it’s a smaller thumb with borders around the side. The preview will show that kind of the proprtioanl but in the page it stretches it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
This issue has been mentioned but as far as I know there is no solution.
I’m curious, have you tried out Flickr Photo Album for WordPress?
http://tantannoodles.com/toolkit/photo-album/
I created my gallery page and some subpages for my photos, but these one are showing on my main menu as a normal page, what can i do to hide them?
Hey Yun, It would be fun if you would have posted a link to your site. From my experience one does not have to create pages for the ‘clicked to’ images. The script will simply pop up album (gallery) images once clicked. The clicked to images can be set to display with JavaScript Effect : Use the admin selectable available popular image effects : Thickbox, Greybox or Lightbox.
I don’t know if the issue about the images has been looked at further… however, I found that if I go to Options>Thumbnail settings and change the width & height to 100×100 and check on the ‘Do resize before cropping’ it makes my image look just fine. Also, under Options>Image settings, I changed the ‘Image quality’ to 100%.
I’m having problems with my thumbnails: I want 100×100 pixel square thumbs and I have the enabled all checkboxes. This gives me the proper square thumbs but quality is very bad. Image quality is set to 100%.
When I unset the first checkbox (don’t know the english text as I use dutch locale) I get proper quality thumbs but not squared.
Any ideas?
Another question: how can I change the sort order of the images in a gallery? I’ve changed in ngginstall the setting of galSort from ‘pid’ to ‘filename’ but this doesn’t seem to do anything.
OK, ignore the last question. I just read over it in the gallery configuration tab.
Hey Yun-
Did you ever manage to solve your issue regarding hiding certain pages from the menu in the sidebar. I’ve the same issue, created from pages for albums galleries to link to but I don’t want these pages to show up as direct links on the sidebar.
Ross
Ross,
I have the following in code in my sidebar to list the top-level pages:
wp_list_pages(’title_li=&depth=1′);
Also, I’ve added an additional Page template that suppresses the display of sub-pages by creating a copy of the page.php file and removing the subpage listing code.
Regarding my question about the incorrect thumbnails I’ve sent Ruben a patch to fix this. The problem was that when ‘Do resize before’ is enabled, a non-square photo is resized in such a way that the smaller side is less than the thumbnail width for square thumbnails. I’ve added some code to change the resize width and height to take this into account so the smaller side is now equal to the width of the square thumbnail.
Ross and Jun,
regarding hiding certain pages from the menu in the sidebar. when you create a new page, on the right side, there’s a section name “Page Parent”, click on the + sign, it’ll show you the other pages, select one that you want to “host” the new page you’re creating … that’s it…
for me, i have a page name “Photos” as the main page, when I created a new one name “my vacations”, and select “Photos” as the parent, click Save … it’ll show me something like this:
Photos
—-My vacations
—-My Friends
I keep getting this message when I try to create a gallery:
Directory wp-content/gallery/ didn’t have the permissions 777!
What do I do? Help, I’m stuck!
Use your ftp program or ssh program to chmod that folder 0777 so the webserver can write to it. Easily accomplished for those with root access. Others may have to get creative by stopping by hotscripts.com to pick up a file manager script. Then one can rename the folder, create a new gallery folder and be able to give it whatever permissions you want (0777 most likely). If you don’t understand this process then google on ftp, file permissions, user nobody, & chmod rather than ask it here.
How do I make the single images appear next to each other rather than in a list? Mine shows up in a row under each other rather than in a horizontal line.
hey there…I am using S.M.A.R.T theme on my wordpress blog and I’ve installed the NextGen Photo Gallery. S.M.A.R.T does not suppose widgets so I went here: http://automattic.com/code/widgets/themes/ and I am STUMPED. There’s all sorts of code but I don’t know where to put any of it. help?!
I don’t get how to use the widget. I put the code into my footer and i either get nothing or my footer dissappears alltogether. I am completely new to php so maybe i’m not putting it in right. I see that the code is:
But I don’t understand what I am supposed to change. Do I leave the $ in there? Any advise would be very nice.
Hello,
can I use different galleries? For Example: I would like to use in my gallery-page the gallery Id=1 and in my sidebar the gallery id=2. Where can I configurate the galleries ID for the sidebar?
Thank you for your support and amazing plugin!
Hello,
Is it possible to use different galleries? For Examble: I would like to use the gallery id=1 for my sidebar, and the gallery id=2 for my pages. Where can I configurate the sidebar galleries?
Thanks your for your support and great plugin!
Hey guys
Anyone know if theres a limit on how many images can go in a gallery? Im trying to upload like 415 standardized jpgs (scanned concert flyers) and for some reason php import craps out at around 153. I thought it was just hitting a bad image that GD didnt like, but now i find that even if i put images in other directories, even completely different random images not from this project, I cannot import them either.
I hope im not missing something fundamental?
I’m having a heck of a time getting a gallery established. I have created the pages to hold my content, but when I go to the Gallery tab and click to create a new gallery, I get this message:
WordPress database error: [Table 'pegasus_wordpress3.wp_ngg_gallery' doesn't exist]
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM wp_ngg_gallery
WordPress database error: [Table 'pegasus_wordpress3.wp_ngg_album' doesn't exist]
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM wp_ngg_album
There are totally 0 pictures in gallerys, which are spread across albums.
No gallery is created, and I can’t create albums either.
I used PHPMyAdmin to look at my database, and there is a wp_ngg_pictures table listed, but there is no wp_ngg_gallery or wp_ngg_album listed.
Any suggestions on what I can do to get the plug-in to create its tables so it can work?
I’m trying to get NextGen to work on my blog. I did a new installation with all the files recommended and created pages in Wordpress to hold my images, but now, I can’t get the plug-in to create a gallery or album for me to use.
There is a pictures table in my SQL database, but I’m missing the gallery and albums table.
Any ideas on how I can get the plug-in to generate its gallery so I can get it to work?
Arjewtino - Use your FTP program or CPANEL to chmod (change) the folders permissions to 777. If that doesn’t work move your hosting to a different more capable server. I recommend one with phpsuexec
David Biddix - Using wp-admin ‘Manage => Pages’ will not insert tables into your WordPress database. Those tables are created upon the activation of the NextGenGallery Plugin. If they were not created then something is fishy (smell that?). All I can offer is to deactivate the plugin and reactivate it and see if you get tables inserted in there. If that doesn’t work you will have to manually insert them. I’m sure sql can be posted to help
Is there a way to create nested albums? I would like to be able to have an album called “art” and inside this album would be more albums of galleries, like photos, paintings, and drawings.
Thanks for any help.
I like your gallery plugin! It works very well on my website. Anyway, I do have a question. I am not too keen on using the sidebar widget because I am not able to customize the sidebar as I like. Is there a php code I can put in the sidebar.php file to load a random picture or a slideshow on the sidebar? Would I still need to activate the NextGen Gallery Widget for this to work?
Thanks and best regards.
Thanks for the helpful information. I have everything set up. I’ve been trying off and on for a week to manipulate the physical display of the galleries(it is defaulted to 3 per row). I would like to gain control over how multiple galleries are displayed within an album on a given page.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please visit my website: jhkessel.com/blog/photos
i am looking to have 4 galleries in a row…
[...] we create a gallery, then an album, and then the page. Other useful place to get instructions was this. I will post a nice gallery in the next few [...]
Thank you for a really nice plugin. I’d been searching for one that gives a neat and tidy presentation yet integrates well with Wordpress, and I think this is it!
Couple of comments from my first installation. I offer these as a small offering of positive criticism, in the hope that they’ll help others:
- language (small) - should be ‘Update successful’ after updating a gallery, etc, rather than ‘Update successfully’.
- I discovered that, in fact, you have two choices to display galleries of photos.
1) First is the NGGallery way, which is to create an album (as instructed) for your main WP Photogallery page, then the Galleries within that, all as described within the instructions. This way, you only need to create one WP page (named Photogallery or something like that), you get one Photogallery page on your menu, and all the galleries are displayed in a neat visual sequence down this Photogallery page. Clicking on a photo takes you to the relevant gallery. This is a predominantly visual approach, it all looks nice and tidy, and is probably better for photo-oriented blogs. Its only lack is a facility for a link at the bottom of the gallery (in the Manage Galleries area) for ‘Back to Photogallery Index’ or something like that.
2) I find this second, alternative approach better if you’re going to have lots of galleries of photos, and if your site is basically more about written content. You create the main WP Page for your album in the normal Wordpress ‘Manage Pages’ area. This page hosts the album ID. You then create WP sub-pages in the normal WP way, each of which will host the individual gallery IDs, and which will have the main Photogallery page as parent. Using this approach will give you a list of sub-pages from your main WP Photogallery page, each sub-page carrying one gallery. However, with this approach you do have to think about the length of your sub-menus if you are using something like the WP Fold Pages plugin, and modify some coding accordingly (e.g. wp_list pages).
Hope these comments are helpful.
I’m still rather pleased with this. Just thought I’d add that (after rereading through the options), you were ahead of me and had already implemented the 2 alternative approaches that I wasted lots of space describing above - for which mea culpa.
I’ve only one comment. Each thumbnail seems to have a kind of large orange border around it, and when you click on it all the other thumbnails jump around. You can see the effect at http://scrawler.co.uk/nujb/?page_id=25
Is there any way to get rid of this?
Hey Slampo,
That would be one of your style sheets telling it to use a border of that color and size on mouseover. Edit your CSS to suit your requirements.
Hi,
I would like to ask if it would be possible to take off the whole effect that this plug-in offers to view the full images and to ask if it would be possible to link to a page where the image is at.
Like when you upload a picture using the normal upload feature, it automatically creates a page where you can insert the picture and then make it link to that page where a bigger version is offered.
Would this be possible with Next Gen Gallery?
Thanks!!
Hello,
I have a problem, I can’t create a gallery cause of this error:
“Directory wp-content/gallery/ didn’t have the permissions 777!”
But i can create a album.
Can anyone help me?
thanks
( and sorry for my bad english )
jova
Well heck, just use your ftp program or website control panel’s file manager to change those directory permissions to 777.
Hi,
thanks a lot for your reply it was very helpful.
My gallery is vertical can i do it horizontal without use slideshow view?
thanks again,
jova
I am having trouble installing this plugin. I have the NGG folder CHMOD to 0777 but it still gives me this error message:
Directory wp-content/gallery/ didn’t have the permissions 777!
That refers to a different folder though. First off this gallery doesn’t exist and second of all should I make one do I CHMOD that?
Hi Starry
go inside wp-content and manaully create a new folder called gallery. CHMOD this gallery folder to 777 and everything should work fine.
anyone help me. i dun understand this tag
[singlepic=id,width,height,mode,float]
example : [singlepic:1,100,100,mode=?,float=?]
hi
how i can but 2 albums on my page and link from there to a gallery?
i edit my page with [album=id1] ; [album=id2], but doesn’t work with the ; . What i have to put in the place of ; ?
Can anyone help me please?
thanx!
One questions and two comments. Comment #1 first - amazing plugin. Probably one of the best Wordpress plugins available. That mygal guy should honestly relax. it’s lightyears ahead of mygal but w/o mygal nexgen clearly wouldn’t have happened.
So…
Question #1 - Is there a way to call all my galleries at once without calling an album and then putting all my galleries in that album?
Comment #2 - This is really more of a comment. The “Web 2.0″ style should have its own style class, because it doesn’t look right as ngg-singlepic. ngg-singlepic looks great w/ a border when the web 2.0 effect is NOT applied. But the “web 2.0/glossy floor” effect loses its depth when it is surrounded by a border.
ps - haris. you don’t write [album=id1] - you just write [album=1,extend] or album=1,compact]
leave out the id part
I’m having problems deleting pages I’ve created. I delete them and the browser refreshes but if I go to a different tab then come back the page(s) I’ve deleted reapear. I’ve tried using Safari, Firefox, and Omni Web. Oddly enough as I’m writing this your screen shots keep activating causeing me to have to close them (strange).
Can any one offer any suggestions?
thanks

Hi,
My provider doesn’t gives me enough server memory to perform the create thumbnail action ( i get a message that don’t have enought memory ( 22 MB), the server status says that i only have 8 mb memory. So the problem is obvious.
) i would love to make and upload thumbs myself. is that possible? and what name do i have to give them ?
Bacause everything works fine ( as long as i upload the pictures one by one
thanks Marieke
Marieke,
The server has it’s own php.ini (PHP initialization file) that sets the memory, but you can override the memory limit by adding a php_value line for the memory_limit to your .htaccess file.
Adding this line to your .htaccess file should do the trick:
php_value memory_limit 24M
Since you mention that you can upload, I assume you can download a copy of the .htaccess file (or edit it directly on the server through your server admin panel). That file is in your root directory (usually public_html).
I had the same problem and adding this line to my .htaccess file did the trick:
php_value memory_limit 48M
Best of luck.

First, thank you so much for this plugin! It took me a little while to understand all the logistics, but I think I’ve got it now.
Is there a way to add slideshows for the different galleries to the sidebar without using the widget?
This is one part that I can’t seem to figure out.
Thanks!
First of all… great plugin, very easy to use! But stil I have a question.
I have two galleries each with different photos. I would like to show the photos of these seperate galleries randomwize in the sidebar. So on top gallery 1 and beneath that gallery 2. Is there a code I can embed in the sidebar.php ?
Hopefully it’s possible
hi heck, did this support WP-mu ? i had try instll it, run great but i need this to be active by default.. how can i do that?
I used to have this plugin running but after upgrading to WP 2.3.1 as well as NGG 0.74 the galleries seem to have been lost. The gallery menues do not work under the “gallery” tab and it is a mess!
I have uninstalled and re-installed without any changes
Just a quick thank you for all the effort put into this plugin. It has made my life a lot easier after I lost my main site after the host went to the wall. I was looking everywhere for a simple gallery presentation system and this is it
best regards

Under “Create new page” I select a page and click “Save Pages,” but the selection reverts back to “Main page (no parent).”
How can I fix this to save my gallery to a page ID?

Great article. When you first download the gallery, it does take a little time to get used to it’s functionality…and then to understand how it generates the code on the back-end.
If anyone was wondering, here is a quick tutorial on how to integrate the NEXTGEN Gallery into your blog’s header
I want all on one page, pictures on top, galleries beneath. And no thickbox popup. Someone seen stg that direction? Tnx!

I see that your article is a year old.Have you been using the latest version of nextGen?
Your demo images pop up so nice and big whereas mine(no matter what I do in the Options page)pop up so dinky.I could use some tips.I’ve tried resetting the images dimensions but nothing ever works.I’m really close to dropping this plugin because I need to be able to have a say in how big the pop up window is and how large my images will be inside it.
Whoa! I have no idea why your images come out small. Where is your gallery? On the Images Tab of the Options screen I have my Resize Images set at 640X480, yet when I upload a 1280X960 image (Wallpapers Gallery) I get the full size in the enlargement. I’m using LightBox BTW, I have not had much luck with the others.
I’m using the latest/greatest version as of 8/4/2008 and really enjoying it. Since PhotoPress went belly-up and worse, was broken via WordPress upgrades I have enjoyed converting those old galleries to NextGEN! Kudos to Alex Rabe
Hi,
I’m using NG Gallery and I want to add more than 10 images in a single gallery. How can I modify that number of images? Because I can’t do this, I tried to use 2 galleries with 10 different images (from different folders) but the gallery display “double 10 images” (I mean those 10 images from the first gallery folder, twice). If anyone can help me ? Thanks in advance!

I installed the nextgen plugin for a friend of mine. He has his wordpress installation not in the root.
http://www.blabla.bla/weblog/
All his images are on
http://www.blabla.bla/dir1
Is it still possible to use the ‘import folder’ function? But how? as I cannot point to dir1 as I get the message that it cannot be found.
Hmmmm, never thought of that. I wonder if you could go from the root:
/home/someaccount/public_html/dir1
or have you tried ../dir1
I haven’t tried them, just some thoughts.
@Flash Buddy
Good one, but no, I then get the message:
/home/someaccount/public_html//home/someaccount/public_html/dir1
but your seconds suggestion worked! but I had to write:
..//dir1
so 2 slashes!
great! thank you!
Great plugin!
Can someone please help me? I want to add the gallery to my page template (page.php) but can’t work out how to do it.
I dont want to add it to my sidebar I just want to add it under my loop on the page.php.
Is this at all possible?
Kind Regards

I have a problem with the NextGen, I create a gallery on my post with [gallery=id] and it works perfect, but when I use “the_excerpt” to get the text of the post it shows the gallery tag too, is there any way to remove this?.
thanks!
I have a problem when upload a picture. there is an error “no GD Library Installed.”
So. what should I do?. I am hosting my site in commercial hosting. so I cannot change my php conf. is there any tips or trik ?

as stated before awsome plugin, cannot wait till the auto tagging functionality is there. I saw in google webmastertools that the crawler suddenly stopped crawling at some urls with galleries; they were slideshows; is there an option to totally disable slideshow?? thank you!
You will have to have your host install the GD Library or switch hosts. There is no other way.
I can not get Greybox to work with NextGen
It does not show up, and I use custom along with greybox in quotes
Hi there,
Alright,I used this plugin and came across one error that took me weeks to ask for support but still didn’t receive any.Well here’s my query:
I’m someone new to the blogging one but I do have a long-time experience with Wordpress.com.I started off with a small website there…and now I have my own-hosted blog.Thing is when I followed all steps and installed the NextGen Gallery…everything went smooth. But when I try to “Add Gallery” after putting in the name, the text box goes blank after hitting Enter. When I go to Manage Galleries, there is no gallery that I can select, but when I check the ftp manager,I can see that a directory is created under /wp-content/gallery/(gallery name) .I tried uploading images to this directory, but still doesn’t work. Please help me guys!!!
PS:-Alex Rabe, could you please help me out with this,I’ve tagged my post in WP Support forums but no one has turned up on me.
Thanks!
Trevor

hiya,
first of all thanks for all the help from all you guys.
When i use [singlepic] tag in a post eberything work and looks fine except 1 thing: in the feed and google search results (see the bottom one, “Suzanna’s success story | petimi blog” for example on: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&hs=KOP&q=suzanna+success&btnG=Search&meta= )
Not sure if it’s the NextGen gallery malfunction as i have the same issue with jlanguagae plugin. The [english] tag is also shown as you can see.
any help would be much appreciated.
thanks
